No Space for Survival

Just over 4 weeks ago I met the three people in this first picture. They were doing everything they could to stay dry and warm, in the alcove of a vacant shopfront in Reading, Berkshire…

I found myself back on the same street today and this is the same spot…

An empty and unused space which gave the slightest of shelter to a few people in dire need, now cleared and fenced off under the guise of calling it dangerous

When people are so desperately trying to survive in the harsh conditions of sleeping rough, why do companies and councils think it’s ok to block them from even the smallest amount of protection?

Maybe the sign on the new wire fence is right, there is danger here. Not from the building, not from the people seeking shelter, but from the heartless landlords and authorities who make it clear that there is no space for survivors in this town…
